Fradgan Place, Newlyn
Approaching across the cobbled courtyard entrance you are met with the most charming grade II listed three bedroom cottage. The house boasts original Georgian wide floor boards, limestone floors, Scantle slate roof, Yorkshire sash windows and original working Cornish range. It has a very private walled rear courtyard with cobble stone floor and remains of the Pilchard press. The house has over the last year been professionally restored to its original glory and now features high specification facilities of an exacting standard while retaining its original features and charm. This perfect example of a traditional Cornish fishermans cottage can only be described as a masterpiece.
This property is a very early example of a pilchard yard or "palace", the place where pilchards were treated and pressed before export to Italy. The slots in the garden walls in the present sun room were used to press, dry and salt the pilchards. Originally the sea came up to the bottom of The Fradgan, and the cobbled slope was the slipway for the boats,
This house would also have had access to the sea from the back courtyard between the pilchard walls. In the courtyard there are various granite posts which supported the roof, and like the wall and slots are remnants of this industry.
